We are all guilty of the Original Sin, we all give into temptation at one time or another. At this little hideout in the backbone of Holland Village, temptation abounds, but only of the non-meat variety. Not a common restaurant style in Singapore, this vegetarian institution, Original Sin, is a perennial favourite and loyal fans keep coming back for more. When it opened in 1997, it was Singapore's first vegetarian restaurant and it remains pretty much unchallenged today, bar the occasional Indian restaurant. Nowhere else in Singapore can you find Mediterranean and Middle Eastern vegetarian cuisine in one restaurant.

Original Sin is a cosy, welcoming place. Its bright sunny entrance, in the daytime, is enhanced by a majestic 'tree of life' mirror. Its open kitchen gives it an even roomier feel and the rustic tiled floors smack of authenticity. Authentic it certainly is, the culinary director—and co-owner—is a Ms Marisa Bertocchi, a true vegetarian and an Australian of Italian descent. She attends to the atmosphere meticulously—she even designed the mosaic piece herself—and ensures that at night the whole place flickers and glitters under candle light.

When it comes to food, Mediterranean fare covers a broad scope that gives ample opportunity and inspiration for the most adventurous vegetarian dishes, from North African Moroccan cuisine to food from the eastern Mediterranean lands of Greece and the Levantine countries, and back to dishes from the sunny of shores of southern Europe, in Italy, Spain and France. Emphasis is placed on using the best and freshest ingredients that are brought direct from the source.

The specialities at Original Sin include the Mezze plate and the Bosco Misto. The first is a quartet of baba ganoush, hummus, tzatziki and the lesser known koresh, a pumpkin and carrot paste infused with caraway and fennel seeds. These much loved Middle Eastern dips are served with delicious falafel patties and warm pitta. The Bosco Misto is a must try. The patties made of spinach and fetta are melded with a light tofu, served with sautéed button mushrooms and plum sauce, and topped with fresh asparagus. Perfection!
Another dish that seems to be popular with patrons is the Portobello mushroom stuffed with ricotta, spinach, pesto and pine nuts. Once baked it is topped with a tomato basil sauce and mozzarella cheese. Magic Mushroom is the name of this dish, and it is certainly appropriate. The moussaka, the vegetarian lasagne and the curries are also highly recommended. With an Italian chef in charge, there are pizzas too but the toppings are less than ordinary with a little Middle Eastern inspiration.Well worth a try.
Placed just next door to its brother restaurant, Michelangelo's, wine lovers can be assured that Original Sin has an excellent wine list, as it shares its collection of wine with its sibling; there are over 2,000 labels from France, Italy, Spain, America, Australia and New Zealand. The restaurant's namesake is the famous Michelangelo painting in the Sistine Chapel, which reflects the artist's passion, creativity and skill. At Original Sin, the cuisine is a reflection of the chef's skill and creativity, and the taste is no less immaculate.
